Summary

What you’ll impact

The role is a remote Data Architect specializing in healthcare data and Databricks lakehouse platforms. The architect will define and govern the enterprise data architecture, guiding engineering teams to build secure, scalable solutions that integrate clinical, claims, operational and member data.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • The architect owns the target-state data architecture and the standards that keep it consistent across teams.
  • Design and govern an end-to-end Databricks lakehouse architecture using medallion (bronze, silver, gold) patterns, Delta Lake, Delta Live Tables and Databricks Workflows.
  • Define enterprise, conceptual, logical and physical data models for clinical, claims, eligibility, pharmacy, provider and member domains.
  • Architect ingestion for healthcare standards and formats, including HL7 v2, FHIR, X12 (837, 835, 834), CCDA, DICOM metadata and flat-file feeds.
  • Establish data governance in Unity Catalog: lineage, access control, data classification, masking and auditing.
  • Build HIPAA-aligned security patterns for PHI and PII, including encryption, row- and column-level security, de-identification and tokenization.
  • Set standards for data quality, master data management, patient and member identity resolution, and reference data (ICD-10, CPT, SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm).
  • Partner with data engineering, analytics, data science and ML teams to support BI, regulatory reporting, quality measures (HEDIS, risk adjustment) and AI/ML use cases.
  • Optimize platform performance and cost: cluster policies, Photon, partitioning and file layout, workload isolation and FinOps practices.
  • Lead architecture reviews, document decisions, and mentor engineers and junior architects.
  • Collaborate with security, compliance, product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable designs and roadmaps.

Requirements

What you’ll bring

  • 15+ years in data architecture, data engineering or enterprise data management, with at least 5 years as a lead or principal architect.
  • 5+ years of hands-on Databricks experience: Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Spark (PySpark and SQL), Delta Live Tables, Workflows and structured streaming.
  • 3+ years working with healthcare data, such as EHR/EMR (Epic, Cerner), claims, eligibility, pharmacy, lab or provider data.
  • Working knowledge of FHIR, HL7 and X12 and of terminology standards (ICD-10, CPT, SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm).
  • Strong data modeling skills: dimensional, 3NF, data vault and canonical healthcare models (for example OMOP or the FHIR data model).
  • Experience with HIPAA, HITECH and PHI handling, and familiarity with SOC 2, HITRUST and 42 CFR Part 2 requirements.
  • Production experience on at least one major cloud (Azure, AWS or GCP) and its data services, including storage, networking, identity and key management.
  • Proven delivery of large-scale migrations from legacy warehouses (Teradata, Oracle, Netezza, SQL Server) to a cloud lakehouse.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present architecture to executives and engineers alike.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field, or equivalent experience.
